Internal
elastic
adjustment systems are the foundation of modern pole fishing methods, they are a
fundamental part of a balanced system which is essential if you are to win at a
professional level. Basic systems run elastic through the tip section, top 2, top 3 and
top 4 depending on the river, lake or canal fished and of course there is always the fish!
A balanced system will have
to consider many factors in the selection of equipment, but there are basics.
Elastic needs to be balanced
with your hook length, it needs to be the correct length to cope with the type of fish you
expect to catch, in the conditions in which you find at your peg : eg
smaller fish to be caught in medium depth open water on light lines can have
low diameter short length elastic, in the same conditions but with
big powerful fish the elastic would be uprated
for the hook length size but also increased in length as the fish will "run"
when hooked. Snaggy, weedy or pegs which have obstacles will generally require shorter
tensioned elastic to be able to "stop" the fish before it becomes snagged in the
obstacle.
Systems also need to be adjustable, as conditions, types of
fish caught etc. can change dramatically during the competition. An increase or decrease
in the numbers or the size of the fish can be controlled easily by quickly removing the
bung and adjusting the elastic up or down to suite the change.
